چکیده

Background/introduction Soft tissue tumors are a heterogeneous group of tumors arising from connective tissues. These tumors may be benign, benign but locally aggressive, or malignant. Surgery either alone or in combination with adjuvant therapies such as radiation or chemotherapy can potentially cure a patient with a soft tissue tumor. The morbidity and complications associated with treatment can have significant and lasting adverse effects on limb function and quality of life. In some situations, patients develop local recurrence of disease and require further surgery, which can result in further treatment-associated morbidity. We have adapted MR guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) techniques to the treatment of benign and malignant soft tissue tumors of the extremities with the goal of safely and effectively performing MRgFUS ablation on human subjects. This presentation describes the use of MRgFUS for the treatment of desmoid fibromatosis, arteriovenous malformations, and malignant sarcomas.

PET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors

Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...

First non-invasive thermal ablation of a brain tumor with MR guided focused ultrasound

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) allows for precise thermal ablation of target tissues. While this emerging modality is increasingly used for the treatment of various types of extracranial soft tissue tumors, it has only recently been acknowledged as a modality for noninvasive neurosurgery. MRgFUS has been particularly successful for functional neurosurgery, whereas...

Calculation of total dose and dose equivalent distribution in the treatment of lung cancer using MR-guided carbon therapy

Nowadays, in order to improve the accuracy of treatment in radiation therapy, there are many attempts to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to the advantages of excellent soft tissue contrast and ultra-fast pulse sequences. On the other hand, carbon-ion radiation therapy is developing rapidly due to the benefits of greater relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and the application in the...

MR-HIFU: The Potential for Combined Imaging and Therapy

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a noninvasive method to deliver highly concentrated energy deep in the body and it has been explored for tissue ablation for over half a century. A safe clinical use requires that the focus is guided by an imaging method. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides such features as excellent soft tissue contrast, temperature sensitivity and ability to d...

Sonalleve MR-HIFU with DISC Philips MR-guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound with Direct Skin Cooling

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound guided by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (also known as MR-guided HIFU, MRgHIFU, or MRgFUS) is a therapy technique which uses focused ultrasound waves to heat and coagulate tissue deep inside the body without damaging intervening tissue and offers an novel, non-invasive treatment option for solid tumors. The Philips Sonalleve MR-HIFU system, initially released in 2...
